So how do you take care of yourself inside of that retrigger? As a person going out into the world, like, what do you value, and what do you want to stand for? Goodman, a voice actor and writer on the hilariously raunchy animated shows Big Mouth and Human Resources (whose credits also include Feel the Beat and Curb Your Enthusiasm), grew up in a religious household in New York and came out as gay in college. Thats where I hope all television and movies get to, where we dont have to have the storyline be about the trauma of somebody coming out or about their race or whatever, but that they just get to exist. The You Gotta Be You author attributes their success in navigating their path to a willingness to lean into feelings that are messy. Its a life approach that even inspired Goodman to start a sex-positive Instagram Live show called Messy Mondays in which they encouraged people to talk about the most muddled things in their lives. Through humorous, honest, and autobiographical storytelling, Goodman explores his relationship to race, sexuality, gender, and their intersections. The idea of saying jokes are jokes, I think, is kind of lazy. I met with a couple publishing houses and I ended up with Legacy and my editor was like, Listen, there are going to be a lot of books about anti-racism coming out in the next couple years because of whats happening, but theres nothing about Black queerness. My hope is that, if youre white, cis and het, youll have a really candid look into what it is to be Black and queer, he said. He wants to bring attention to things that many people might not be aware of, or that they might not feel comfortable discussing. When he is open and willing to discuss things related to queer sex, its because his goal is to make it not-awkward or dirty in some way. He talks about this from time to time online and when he is in . I say that Walter is the definition of love and chaos together as one, Goodman adds. And then you trick yourself into thinking that they are. Anyone who follows along on his journey and his life is able to tune in to watch him and enjoy, too, and that is what he is there for. So lets acknowledge that and have those conversations so that we can do better. But then you always realize that you're not like them GOODMAN: And that you're also - if you are approaching it from that angle where you're not whole and you're lacking, then you are, I think, unconsciously or subconsciously, excusing bad behavior from those white men where you become a racial prop. I want white people and non-Black people to be curious about experiences that are not their own and have a really candid insight into that. CHANG: Hi. Just this morning, there was a tweet from the co-chair of the Michigan Republican Party where she called Pete Buttigieg a weak little girl. Do you find reading the news triggering and how do you react? What is it like working on the new show Human Resources? They had some bigger names in mind for Walter, but Goodman started reading his lines during the table reads, fell in love with the character, and never looked back. When did that hit you that that's what your purpose is? And maybe thats why they like it in some cases. I think for a joke to be a joke, we should all be in on it, we should all be able to enjoy it.
